Most bedroom styles add: a headboard, a pair of lamps, art above the bed, a bench, a rug, cushions. Japandi takes away until only what serves sleep is left. The bed drops to a low platform in dark wood, the bedding is washed linen in oat and white, the nightstand becomes a stool with one cup on it, and at least two walls stay completely bare. What remains is texture: wood, linen, paper and clay, in two tones, warm and cool.
It suits bedrooms that are small, awkward or dark, because nothing is tall and nothing competes, and it suits anyone who finds pure minimalism cold but wants the same calm. One large window, plain walls, a high padded bed and floral bedding. Four ways a Japandi bedroom loses its calm
A tall bed
A high divan or a padded headboard breaks the low horizon the style depends on. Go as low as you can live with; the room will feel taller and quieter at once.
Two matching lamps
The hotel pair of lamps and nightstands is exactly what Japandi is not. One stool with a cup, one paper lamp on the other side, or nothing: asymmetry is part of the calm.
Only one tone of wood
All pale wood reads Scandinavian; all dark reads heavy. A dark bed on a pale floor, a pale stool next to a dark bench: the contrast is the style.
Filling the walls
Art above the bed is the first thing to remove. Leave the walls bare, or hang one small piece low on a side wall, and let the plaster and the light do the work.

What is the difference between a Japandi and a Scandinavian bedroom?
Scandinavian is brighter and softer: pale wood, more textiles, a knitted throw, a sheepskin, a small print or two. Japandi sits lower and darker, mixes dark wood with pale, leaves surfaces and walls emptier and swaps the knitwear for hand-made ceramics and paper. If you want cosy, go Scandinavian; if you want still, go Japandi.
Does Japandi work in a small bedroom?
It is one of the best styles for one. A low bed and empty walls make a small room read larger, and because the nightstand is a stool and storage is a bench, very little floor is taken. Keep the wardrobe closed and resist adding shelves.
