Four things that make a modern living room look cheap
Grey on grey on grey
Grey walls, grey sofa, grey rug is not modern, it is unfinished. Use warm neutrals with one dark anchor and one metal, and let the materials do the colour work.
Gloss furniture
High-gloss TV units and lacquered tables date a room instantly. Choose matte wood, stone and metal; they photograph better and age better.
Too many small things
Modern rooms fail on quantity. One large artwork beats six small frames, one big plant beats four small ones, and one rug that reaches under every piece beats two that don't.
